Inside the Opera, Amargosa Hotel, The ’nik‘ Showcase Building, Abandoned, Borax Dump Site
Die Geschichte des Amargosa Opern Hauses beginnt in einer Fahrt mit meinem Freund Bill durch Death Valley. An einer Abbiegung der Straße gab es ein Hinweisschild auf das Amargosa Opera House.
Ich musste sofort an die Aufnahmen von dem ‚Grand Teatro de la Habana‘ von Robert Polidori denken. Ich sah quasi das Foto vor meinen Augen, und musste diese ‚Oper‘ in dieser total abgelegenen Gegend auf jeden Fall sehen. Bill willigte mit Interesse ein, und wir konnten sehen, dass es nicht nur ein Gebäude mit der Beschriftung des Opern Hauses gab, sondern auch ein Armagosa Hotel. Es war um die Mittagszeit, die Tür zum Opern Haus war verschlossen, und wir versuchten im Hotel zu erfahren wie wir einen Zugang bekommen konnten.
Allein der Eingangsraum des Hotels war eine Offenbarung. Es war Ausstellung über das Wirken von Marta Becket, der Erbauerin des Opern Hauses.
The story of the Amargosa Opera House begins with a drive through Death Valley with my friend Bill. At a bend in the road, there was a sign pointing to the Amargosa Opera House. I was immediately reminded of Robert Polidori’s photographs of the *Gran Teatro de la Habana*. I could practically see the image before my eyes, and I knew I absolutely had to see this „opera house“ located in such a remote area. Bill was interested as well and agreed to go, and we discovered that there wasn’t just a building labeled „Opera House,“ but also the Amargosa Hotel. It was around midday; the door to the opera house was locked, so we tried to find out at the hotel how we could gain access. The hotel’s entrance hall alone was a revelation. It housed an exhibition on the work of Marta Becket, the woman who built the opera house.
